What's In Your Water?

You know that you cannot fully trust the purity of water flowing from your faucets. Municipal tap water also comes from recycled water, heavily chemically treated and passing through miles of rusty pipes that can get re-contaminated with bacteria, viruses or cysts before reaching your homes. Raw well water can contain dangerous bacteria, molds and chemical compounds causing bad taste and odor, or worst, make you and your family sick.

It seems like every day there is another story in the news about water contamination. House residents being told to boil their water because of coliform or e-coli bacterial contamination, People getting sick from eating lettuce and salad vegetables because the water they were washed in is contaminated.

Even more frightening are reports that heart disease, cancer, gastro-intestinal illnesses and even death can result from contamination in our water. Some of these contaminants are even added to water to protect our health.

Studies have shown since the 1960’s that the chlorination of drinking water increases the risk of developing heart disease, other organ diseases and cancer. Chlorinated water leaves behind chemicals that have been proven to cause cancer. These chemicals are even recognized as dangerous and are regulated by the EPA.

What about chemicals and drugs? Have you heard the reports of household chemicals and drugs and hospital wastes contaminating our drinking water? Then there are the heavy metals, fertilizers, pesticides, petroleum by-products, disinfection chemicals and the impact these may have on your family’s health.

A good home water filtration system with the right components can give your family the protection you need by removing the potentially dangerous contaminants - whether you are on a public water supply or use a private well.

BOTTLED WATER HYPE

Bottled water – A $22 billion dollar industry, 54% of the population drink bottled water. It is at least 1000% more expensive than tap water. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) conducted a 4-year study on bottled water and these are some of the findings: One quarter of US bottled water is filtered municipal water. 103 out of 1000 brands contained synthetic organic chemicals and bacteria. Plastic bottles in which bottled water is typically sold are made of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) which can release phthalates that is carcinogenic. Plastic bottles are recycled up to 100 times before made into other products. Many brands have no expiration date and may have been sitting in warehouses for an undetermined period of time.

Bottled water has an expensive, ecological price tag. 1.5 million tons of plastic are used to make bottles for bottled water per year. The oil that’s required to make an annual supply of plastic bottles for the United States alone is enough to fuel 200,000 cars for one year. Only 15 % is recycled and 85 percent of these bottles end up in garbage dumps, where it takes 1,000 years to biodegrade.

Add in all the fuel required to transport bottled water across the globe, and you end up with a real disaster.

MUNICIPAL TAP WATER

Municipal Tap Water –Mostly supplied by the municipality, it is subject to a chemical process of disinfection. Sources are recycled water that is de-sedimented and chemically treated then released into streams and lakes. The same water with added rainfall is pumped into reservoirs where it awaits further chemical treatment. Chlorine is mainly used; a chemical that kills all life forms in water, also a known carcinogen. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set limits on its use. Another chemical used is fluoride. EPA has set an enforceable usage of 4m/L. Excessive use leads to bone disease and nervous system damage. Another chemical is Trihalomethanes (THM). This is a group of four chemicals namely chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform. The EPA has set allowable levels of usage for THMs, a Group B carcinogens (shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals). Other chemicals used are Chloramines, Haloacetic Acids, Bromate and Chlorite. This chemically-treated water then passes though and corrodes miles and miles of pipes, many containing lead, and into your homes or businesses.
